Summit Lodge & Spa Boutique Hotel - Whistler Village, BC

Thanks to this month’s glorious sunny days with temperatures in the high 20C, much of the snow on the lower slopes of Whistler Bike Park has melted. In already a record breaking year, May 17, 2013 marks some of the Bike Park’s higher trails earliest opening ever. The trail team have worked tirelessly to get a decent number of trails open, including Crabapple Hits, Crank-it-Up, A-line, B-line, Ninja Cougar and Karate Monkey.

Check out the Whistler Bike Park Opening Day 2013 Video:

From now until October, you can expect to see bikes, and bikers wearing armour and full face helmets, all of which will be covered in dirt by the end of the day — Whistler summer attire. Needless to say, come October, when the park closes, Whistler’s washing machines will deserve a well-earned break!

The Whistler Bike Park can certainly be challenging, but there is something for every level of rider. With over 1,200m/4,800ft of park terrain, you are sure to find trails that suit you. Not sure what type of rider you are? Check out this rider guide.

Are you a first time rider, or feeling a bit rusty between seasons? You can practice indoors in the Air Dome; an 8,400 square foot covered indoor bike training facility with various jumps, wooden ramps, and a foam pit. Once ready to hit the trails, you can even take a guide along for the day. You’ll be shown the best trails for your skill development. Whistler has it all!

Bikes and gear can be rented at a competitive rate at Garbanzo Bike and Bean, located in the base of Carleton Lodge. Whether you choose to travel with your bike or rent one, Summit Lodge Hotel Whistler is a bike friendly accommodation with 24 hour Secured Bike Storage and staff only access, so you can be sure your gear is always safe.

Once gay marriage was legalized in Canada in 2003, the inclusive vibe of Whistler made it one of the premiere go-to destinations for gay weddings. After all, the LGBTQ community is every bit as welcomed here as their straight brothers and sisters, you couldn’t ask for a more picturesque setting, sports abound, there are food and drink opportunities at every turn, and…well, it’s Whistler. Gay-friendly Whistler.

Because, truth be told, Whistler is not just a gay ski resort, it is an everyone ski resort. Tall, short, old, young, every race, every size, and every colour. In world where everything hasn’t yet caught up to the standards we hold dear here in Canada, you can count on the attitude of acceptance that is abundant in Whistler, making it the perfect place for international travel, gay travel, and just travel period. And for those who may have faced less than welcoming behaviours in other times or places, being welcomed for a Whistler same-sex marriage feels like coming home. (Come home to gay Whistler!)
