While Whistler Blackcomb Mountains may be best known for the amazing and reliable skiing/snowboarding, Whistler is actually a year-round destination. When the winter melts away in the Alpine, a variable smorgasbord of colour and wildlife emerge. Alpine meadows, sprawling glaciers and indigenous wildlife are just some of the wonders to experience on Whistler’s hiking and walking trails.

Your adventure begins with a quick ride up the whistler village gondola; keep an eye out for bears that often graze on the slopes. You will also see downhill mountain bikers riding some of the most intricate and expansive downhill trail network in North America.

The first stop is the Round House Lodge – if that’s as far as you decide to go it’s still an epic photo opportunity with seeming never-ending scenic mountain views. Be sure to make time for lunch at the Round House Lodge and enjoy it on the patio while you soak in the majestic mountains.

If you would like to see more or plan on hitting the hiking trails, then step aboard on the PEAK2PEAK Gondola and prepare for 11 minutes of jaw dropping sightseeing (*Tip – there are 2 Gondolas with glass bottoms, ask the lift attendant if you want to wait for them). The record-breaking PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola is an engineering marvel that links Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains together at their peaks. Boasting the longest unsupported lift span in the world (3.024 kilometres or 1.88 miles), it is also the highest lift of its kind with an elevation of 436 metres  /1,427 feet.

Whistler Blackcomb Mountains offer amazing alpine hiking trails. Both mountains are famous for their alpine wildflowers and you can expect to see an abundance of colourful Fireweed (a purple-red flower), Western Anemone (looks a bit like a mop), Tiger lilies and Pink Monkey Flowers. Keep an eye out for the elusive Hoary Marmot  (North America’s largest ground squirrel) which inhabits the mountains.

Many hiking tours are available and recommended for those new to hiking. While the alpine experience is definitely a must do while in Whistler it is always more enjoyable with a knowledgeable guide at the helm.

Be sure to dress in layers as weather can be unpredicatable, always carry water and don’t forget your camera!
